What Alcohol Abuse Does To Your Body

As you build up a tolerance to alcohol over time, it suppresses the neurotransmitters in your brain that produce feelings of excitability. When you stop drinking, those neurotransmitters are no longer suppressed, but your brain doesn’t know how to handle them. Your brain rebounds into a state of hyperexcitability, which may include the following symptoms, some of which can be quite serious:

  • Shaky Hands
  • Sweating
  • Anxiety
  • Agitation
  • Irritability
  • Headache
  • Tremors
  • Confusion
  • Rapid Heartbeat
  • Seizures
  • Hallucinations
  • Nausea
  • Muscle Pain & Stiffness
  • Hypertension

In more severe cases, alcohol withdrawal can result in delirium tremens, or DTs, which may include some or all of the above symptoms. DTs usually appear 2-3 days after the last drink, but they can affect each person differently, or not at all. Alcohol detox withdrawal seizures can be life-threatening, which is why it’s critically important to detox under a medically managed detox program. Speak to one of our detox counselor by calling (866) 921-8893. Call and see how we can help you safely detox.

Your Support Network

Because of the physical and psychological impact alcohol has, detoxing from alcohol can be a scary and emotionally taxing time for you and your loved ones. It’s important to have a strong support environment that includes caring and knowledgeable staff, family, and friends. You need people who will keep an eye on your physical and emotional wellbeing as you recover from detox and withdrawals.

Alcohol Detox Program

Typically, alcohol detox at FootPrints BHC is handled in an Residential Treatment (RT) setting, meaning you recover at one of our chosen facility under the care of a licensed staff and medical supervision. Your care may include medication to ease the withdrawal symptoms, and our staff works closely with you and your loved ones to determine the best course of treatment. Once the withdrawal symptoms have passed, we recommend inpatient rehabilitation, which includes ongoing medical supervision coupled with treatment and counseling that are appropriate for your situation.

Recovery from alcohol addiction is likely to be one of the most challenging things you ever have to do. But with the right support, it’s possible…we see it happen daily.
